Attitude Theories Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Attitude Theories - Essay Example 22). Katz emphasizes that when attitude is spoken out in the form of words, it becomes an opinion, which may not always be interpreted in the true spirit because the second person can not see the fundamental attitude that caused the opinion. For example, if someone says, ââ¬Å"You look healthier than beforeâ⬠. We might not understand if he means to appreciate the other personââ¬â¢s health or just make him conscious by calling him fat. Kelman, on the other hand, speaks about opinion change which indirectly causes a modification of the original attitude. Kelman explains the phenomenon of opinion change with respect to three qualitative variables which are compliance, internalization and identification which are essentially a means of social influence on the attitude of the individual. Katz has adopted a functional approach towards the definition of attitude in contrast to Kelman, who has explained how social influence can induce changes in the behavioral constructs of people. Katz has identified two ways in which attitude functions to cause human reaction to the surroundings ââ¬â a rational attitude that induces optimism in human approach towards the analysis of and reaction to the matters and an irrational attitude that misleads people and causes them to respond irrationally landing them in trouble. ââ¬Å"The functions are those of adjustment, egodefense, value expression and knowledge.â⬠(Fones, p. 23). On the other hand, the ââ¬Å"complianceâ⬠referred to by Kelman is essentially an acceptance of the propositions of others in a hope to achieve a certain expected outcome. ââ¬Å"Identificationâ⬠means the modification of attitude in an attempt to make it compatible with that of the group to gain a sense of identity and affiliation with that group. ââ¬Å"Internalization causes people to accept otherââ¬â¢s opinion because they feel that the proposed opinions reaffirm their basic thoughts and values. Both Katz and Kelman have been quite

Dog Day Afternoon Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Dog Day Afternoon - Essay Example As the paper highlights he was certainly assisted by the rest of the cast such as John Cazale as the saddest bank robber in the world, Sal and the possibly in one of his most unforgettable performances, the portrayal of Sonnyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"other wifeâ⬠Leon by Chris Sarandon. And the many others all added to the cavalcade of this consciousness raising experience. However, the nature of Pacinoââ¬â¢s performance and the amount of empathy he was able to invoke from the audience was the primary catalyst for their almost subconscious acceptance of an alternate view of the traditional leading man in the cinema. From this study it is clear that Dog Day Afternoon was made and released in 1975-76 during a time when countercultures and counterrevolutionaries were still on a rise from the sixties. In fact, it was probably even more acceptable now to mainstream audience who by this point had been exposed to the cold war and Fidel Castro and Hippies as well as the social reforms of civil rights movement that occurred throughout the sixties and is still occurring. This expression of a new masculinity challenges the traditional American emphasis on the hard hitting hero with a heart of gold, so to speak. Here in this film ther are certainly notions of some sexual liberation from gender stereotyping.à In a sense, most art, film, literature, etc. have a tendency to push the envelope of the cultures mind and gradually expose their audiences to a new attitude and more expansive ideas of what human being are supposed to be and what they can and should be capable of. Dog day Afternoon gives us an alternate viewpoint, a somewhat more blurry line between the criminal and the hero, the leading man and the sensitive male, so that the audience sees how it is possible to cheer for someone who may not be the cowboy with the white hat and cetrtainly not the typical hero of a tale.

Work Sheet Questions Essay Example for Free
Work Sheet Questions Essay 1) Throughout the selection, Jamaica Kinkaid seems to not be dealing with conflict in the present but more with reflecting on her conflicts in the past. She portrays her mother in not the best sense, sharing with us how she would always talk down to her kids and never be ââ¬Å"motherlyâ⬠. Kinkaid states when her and her siblings were younger, the mother was viewed as more of a ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠than a mother, that she was always there to help them out in times of need but as they started to grow, the mothers outlook on her children would change. The kids started to resent their mother to a point where Kinkaid said she would ââ¬Å"rather be dead than spend an eternity to with herâ⬠. Kinkaid was left on bad terms with her mother, 3 years with no speaking because her mother never supported her responsibilities and didnââ¬â¢t consider Kinkaid becoming an independent woman. 2) At the time of the conflict, which is when Kinkaid had started to grow up, I could tell that she was very hurt by it. She says how she has children now and they love one another and love her, and she relates it back to her growing up and how everything was so much different with her relationship with her mother. When Kinkaidââ¬â¢s mother was acting the way she was towards herself and her siblings, she had a sense of resentment towards her mother because all her mother would do is discourage and lower her self esteem by all the negative comments being said. There was a sense of tension between the mother and her children, her children (to me) always seemed like they were unhappy by their mothers actions and the way she acted towards them. A mother is suppose to be the best person in your life, a care taker, some one always there to pick you up but, not in the case we are given with Jamaica Kinkaid. 3) When dealing with ââ¬Å"initial perspectiveâ⬠, I decide to always culturally analyze the essay and what is going on throughout it. I noticed that at the beginning of the essay, Kinkaid is referring to her mother as a ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠, using the word god as a term to her your mother, made me take a religious look on some parts of the essay. When Kinkaid tries to explain to us how her mother is a ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠, I canââ¬â¢t help but stop myself and think ââ¬Å"she is just explaining what normal mothers doâ⬠. I believe she perceived her mother as a God whenever she helped her kids and was there for them and when she wasnââ¬â¢t she was just a ââ¬Å"motherâ⬠. I think the author holds her perspective of hurt throughout the essay because she is trying to share with her audience the way she felt and was treated throughout all the times with her mother. 4) Different perspectives exist in the same time period because there are millions of people living in the same time period and everyone is entitled to their own thought. Take slavery for example, in the South there were white people and black people. The black people hated slavery because they were the slaves and were being mistreated doing labor, where as the white people just controlled them. That is the same time period but two different perspectives. 5) There is no perspective change over time. Jamaica Kinkaid starts off the essay by telling us her problem with her mother, as the essay goes on she elaborates and tells us details leading up to all the problems, such as the issues with her brother and not knowing her real father. And she ends the story with speaking about her children and referring briefly back to why things never worked out with her mother. 6) I donââ¬â¢t believe there was a perspective time because as I said, Kinkaid stuck with the same theory throughout the essay. There was never a time in the essay where she had a total change of heart about her mother, there were times when she did talk good about her, when she would tell stories how her mother would take care of the kids when ever something was wrong, but mostly the story talks about the dislike and misunderstanding between a mother and her children.

Human Interaction with Nature in the Works of Aldo Leopold and Elizabet
Human Interaction with Nature in the Works of Aldo Leopold and Elizabeth Bishop The poet Elizabeth Bishop and the naturalist Aldo Leopold share a keen power of observation, a beautifully detailed manner of writing, a love for the beauty of nature, and an interest in how people interact with the natural world. Like Leopold, Bishop examines human interactions with nature on both the personal and the ecological level. On the individual level, a hunterââ¬â¢s contact with the animal he or she is hunting changes his or her attitude toward nature in both Bishopââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"The Fishâ⬠and Leopoldââ¬â¢s essay ââ¬Å"Thinking Like a Mountain.â⬠On the larger level, both Bishop in her poem ââ¬Å"The Mountainâ⬠and Leopold throughout the Sand County Almanac envision the role of human beings in relation to the rest of the natural world as one of exploration and interpretation through science and art. In both Bishopââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Fishâ⬠and Leopoldââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Thinking Like a Mountain,â⬠the personââ¬â¢s contact with a wild animal comes about through hunting. In theory, hunting is a sport, ââ¬Å"a challenge of fang against bulletâ⬠(Leopold 129), in which the animal has a fair chance of escaping. In reality, however, there is no real challenge for the hunter in either case. Leopold and his companions, ââ¬Å"pumping lead into the packâ⬠(130), kill the wolf not by skill but by the sheer number of bullets, while Bishopââ¬â¢s speaker testifies, ââ¬Å"He didnââ¬â¢t fight. / He hadnââ¬â¢t fought at allâ⬠(5-6). Thus, both call into question whether their hunting is actually a sport. Both Leopold and Bishopââ¬â¢s speaker are initially unaware of the true value of the creatures they hunt. Leopold writes, ââ¬Å"I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunterââ¬â¢s paradiseâ⬠(130). Bish... ... of human beings in nature is to explore, perceive, understand, and give a voice to the world around them through science and art. They suggest this both through what they say in their writing and by the very act of writing, which is an act of perception and interpretation of nature. However, their interpretations of the mountainââ¬â¢s message beg the question of whether they are interpreting it correctly, or whether they are simply attributing their own views to landforms. Perhaps their works are best seen as an invitation to their readers to explore the natural world for themselves and create their own interpretations. Contact with wild creatures might change our attitudes too! Bibliography Bishop, Elizabeth. The Complete Poems, 1927-1979. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Leopold, Aldo. A Sand County Almanac. Is Texting Language Really Appreciated? Essay
In Texting: Why All the Fuss? By David Crystal, a chapter from Txting: The Gr8 Db8, he mentions, ââ¬Å"Texting is just another variety of language, which has arisen as a result of a particular technology.â⬠In the excerpt Crystal talks about the drawbacks and benefits of texting. His main focus in the text is how texting has influenced grammar in teenagers. But, are the teenagers really the only ones to blame in this situation? Is it the parents? Or maybe the teachers? Overall, everyone is at fault to the drawbacks, but the teenagers are responsible for the evolution of communication. Just because teenagers use abbreviations, or texting ââ¬Å"languageâ⬠does not make them illiterate, it is a type of language whose flexibility and convenience needs to be appreciated. Crystal claims how texting has arisen in the technological world by showing how people use their phone frequently. The text mentions how Jan Van den Bulck, from Catholic University of Leuven says, ââ¬Å"Among 16-year olds, the interference was greater: 20.8 percent were woken up at least once a week with their phones.â⬠Also the chapter stated, ââ¬Å"Half the employees said that they always respond immediately to a message.â⬠Texting problems have also carried over into the outside world. Crystal stated, ââ¬Å"Most employees reporting that they checked work-related text messages and emails even when at home or on holiday.â⬠In the excerpt Crystal lists obvious benefits and drawbacks from the over-usage of cellphones and texting. He notes, ââ¬Å"I believe any form of writing exercise is good for you.â⬠David Crystal is saying, that even though cellphone users to use proper texting etiquette, any form of writing can only benefit you. ââ¬Å"Another study concluded that texting actually helps the development on communication skills such as the ability to summarize andà express oneself concisely,â⬠quoted from David Crystal. Crystal also mentioned from the same study, ââ¬Å"Texting motivates people to sharpen their diplomatic skills, for, as with all written activity, it allows more time to formulate thoughts and express them carefully.â⬠There are not only benefits from texting; there are plenty of drawbacks involving distracting users, and health issues. Texting has caused issues with time management, loss of sleep, and addiction. As mentioned, before a significant amount of teenagers a re being woken up in the middle of the night by their cellphones going off. Ironically, there is a medical term for a text messaging injury known as ââ¬Å"TMIâ⬠. TMI is also an abbreviation for ââ¬Å"too much information,â⬠which is commonly as texting dialect. In the text Crystal does mention, ââ¬Å"Every time I talk to groups of teachers and examiners, I ask them whether they have encountered anything remotely similar. None of them ever has.â⬠Crystal is referring to children and teenagers using ââ¬Å"text languageâ⬠in their schoolwork and essays. Crystal reports, ââ¬Å"The concern over texting lingo has been greatly exaggerated; he s that on average, less than 10 percent of words in text messages are abbreviated.â⬠Personally, I am not a huge texting person. Iââ¬â¢d rather have a face-to-face conversation; but Iââ¬â¢m not going to sit here and say that I donââ¬â¢t text. If itââ¬â¢s just a casual conversation, I donââ¬â¢t mind texting but if it were an argument Iââ¬â¢d rather have it be in person. Yelling at someone is easier than to take my anger out the keyboard on my phone. My experiences with t exting and using my cellphone somewhat relate to the point David Crystal was trying to make. I do get rarely woken up by texts, I text while I am at work, but I do not use text language. Newer phones have autocorrect in their system, which means if you misspell a word the phone will fix the spelling error, as you are texting a message. Itââ¬â¢s quite relevant, and more people should turn that on, especially from seeing the statistics from David Crystalââ¬â¢s chapter. Iââ¬â¢ve been texting for about 10 years now, and it has not really changed my grammar if anything it has benefited it. When I was 10 I used text language and abbreviations, but that is because I didnââ¬â¢t really know what ââ¬Å"proper grammarâ⬠was at that point. I have been disrupted from my daily schedule with my phone going off from time to time. Seeing how I am nine hours away from home, and my dad lives in Germany. I do get a lot of texts and calls when I am busy in class, or doing homework. Honestly, I donââ¬â¢t expect anything different; weââ¬â¢re all onà different time schedules. Sleeping has not really been much a problem for me; I do sleep with my phone in my bed because it is my alarm clock in the morning. Keeping my phone in my bed has not been much of an issue for me. I make sure to keep my phone on silent so I donââ¬â¢t get disrupted. Texting has not really made me feel safe. I have been in two different car accidents, and the driver has been texting while driving. I have absolutely no respect for anyone who chooses to text and drive; itââ¬â¢s not just for your safety. I have absolutely no service anywhere I go, so if something bad were to happen I more then likely wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to call for help. Addiction to phones is possible; Crystal mentions how, ââ¬Å"Priory clinics were reporting a sharp rise in ââ¬Å"technology addiction.â⬠I can proudly say, I am not addicted to my cell phone or texting; itââ¬â¢s more of a luxury rather than a necessity. The issues with texting will constantly be an argument, no matter what age, or what profession is speaking their opinion. Crystal proves remarkable points, but there are ways to make an argument supporting the other side. I believe that David Crystals article was more informing than David Carrââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"Keep Your Thumbs Still When Iââ¬â¢m Talking To You.â⬠Crystal shows downfalls and benefits on both sides to the debate of texting, and provides specific statistics, and quotes from other sources. Texting is just another variety of language, which has arisen as a result of a particular technology, but it is a type of language whose flexibility and convenience needs to be appreciated. Demographic Change And Influence In Peoples Development
Throughout universe history, have ever presented different demographic tendencies and assorted population-related events and motions of this, which does non be given to be stable but on the contrary, both interregional moves inA out of these states as elsewhere, about ever in hunt of better chances in life.A The influence of these motions is big and tends to turn around the universe, bring forthing alterations non merely in host states but besides in the place, so doing necessary alterations in the policies of these states to turn to the assorted effects of the motion migration Were submitted times in the universe where population alterations have non been so great, but alternatively there have been others where migration has increased significantly.A The 20th century was one of the latter because many experts was a century where migratory motions set the tone, seeing that if the chief characteristic of these is that they were from south to north, east and west, looking as countriesA less developed south many people migrated north and most developed industrialised states, and besides the Asiatic continent was a great migration to Europe, the United States and Canada.A This has impacted to a great extent on the host towns, as these now hold a big figure of people of other nationalities with the usual influences both culturally, and economically and politically of class. But these motions have non completed and the hereafter has to be really influential in footings of the guidelines which states are to put off the migration.A You can speak so, that was given a new order in the universe because of demographic alterations, seeing that there are countries like the United States and Canada that have a big figure of migrators from other countries, for illustration in the U.S. is a really big populationA who have arrived in the state of the South American continent, even to talk of a Hispanization of this state, while in Canada the bulk of migrators come from eastern states like China.A Meanwhile on the European continent there are two phenomena worthy of analysis foremost of all the aging European population because most of all to the low rate of births that occur in this continent due to factors such as households with one kid, marriagesA more delayed when there is no opportunity of gestating, usage of all methods of contraceptive method, which has resul ted in jobs in the economic system of these states as easy running out of labour, there is a good venture that lead to the creationA new concerns and besides has increased the load on the provinces due to pensions to be paid to a population that is non productive.A Even states that the European population is ââ¬Å" hedonic â⬠and is excessively lazy to work out what is damaging to its economic system[ 1 ]along with this phenomenon is one that is migration in big Numberss of people from Eastern states, most of all withA Muslim faith have come to the old continent and multiplied in great Numberss, bring forthing as a population job that is non good prepared, no one truly skilled labour to help the production and besides that they have been turning muchA , to the extent that some are stating that in 2050 Europe will be Muslim.A CEPAL has cleared these alterations in the European population by stating in his study of the Symposium on International Migration: ââ¬Å" In the early 20th century population of Europe had, about ternary the size of the African, while today the populations of Africa and Europe are about the same size, but by 2050 it is expected that the population of Africa has threeA times the size of Europe â⬠[ 2 ] As you can see this influence occurs non merely in bring forthing societal alteration in society which highlights the socialization of the states of the mixture of civilizations and traditions that can agitate the national individuality loss values of eachA part, but besides affects the economic and of class political. All this has had little by small in having states arise jobs such as neo-Nazi groups which are against the ââ¬Å" invasion â⬠of their districts pro from people from other states, taking to societal struggles and even in metropoliss like disordersA seen in some European states, most of all by immature people who feel that their occupation chances are being taken by migrators, harmonizing to CEPAL ââ¬Å" turning xenophobia in some states, caused by recession and unemployment has exacerbatedA ill will towards migratory workers â⬠[ 3 ].A But look at the political degree because host states seeking to halt a sea of people, so to talk, that comes to your floors begin to place and develop criterions that can be considered anti-immigrant, seeking to forestall the population becomingA largely migrators, as was the instance of the U.S. in recent times has even constructing a wall merely seeking to forestall more Mexicans from come ining their district illicitly. All this has deductions in both, in the receiving state and the beginning one, seeing such an of import facet with respect to economic sciences, since migrators normally work to acquire money sent back to their households, which is called remittals andA that have become a really of import point in the economic system of less developed states, to the extent that the crisis of recent old ages affect this facet of the economic system by diminishing the sum of remittals due to the loss of occupations on allA United States.A These remittals are invested in betterments in the quality of household life that migrators have left buttocks and there are besides nest eggs in investing, which can take to greater advancement and development of these regions.A But neither can deny that ââ¬Å" south-north migration has contributed to the sustained development of states of the North â⬠[ 4 ] But this implies some jobs for having states like the U.S. and Canada, although the major impact has been the first to hold the largest figure of migrators, since many of them are illegal or undocumented immigrants are engaged in work, which form portion orA the informal or belowground economy.A And this must go on so as the tendency given that there ââ¬Ës more to migrate despite all limitations that might be, it is besides clear that the population will be from now on uninterrupted diminution, even the least developed countriesA But despite all this in 2050 there will be more or less 9.6 billion people[ 5 ].A But sing that in Europe by and large, that population diminution, rise in the U.S. and Canada, trebling in Africa. While Latin America, will hold a medium growth.A In general we can state that the rate of kids per adult female in hapless states will be reduced to 2.5 whereas in industrialised states will be even lower, but these will hold a rate higher than for older individ uals, to the extent thatA is said to be two aged for every child.A In general, surveies on universe population and its tendency until 2050 says that in industrialised states like Japan, China and Europe every bit good as the North American birth rate will be merely the lower limit to guarantee the endurance of the population.A But in most states of the universe much of the population will be over 40 years.A Can so be summarized by stating that in the poorest states will hold an mean population growing while developed births this growing will be lower but the population may stay more or less stable growing by migration. But another job that must be considered is that slow population growing that is every twenty-four hours more and more resources consumed many of which are slow to be replaced and others can non be replaced because in many instances have lost the ability regenerative capacity of the land so that resource will be a large job in 2050 doing it the poorest states that normally consume more resources are going poorer, which of class may increase the migration of these intoA more developed states.A A A A AFor all the above is clear that all states, both having and beginning states of migrators to take every one by his side steps to cut down this migration worldwide. Recipient states should endeavor to cut down this moving ridge with new legislative acts for the migrators but thereby bring forth xenophobic hatred and strife that finally merely convey societal and security jobs, should besides give more support without excessively many conditions on developing countriesA that they can in bend offer policies that encourage their citizens to stay in its district. The truth is that a true population policy has non been anyplace in the universe, there have been some stray steps but small has been achieved together.A By states seeking development should hold authoritiess who believe authorities policies that either direct or indirect impact on demographic procedures such as in-migration and airing of prophylactic methods, and stronger controls on immigration.A It should be clear that for states like Canada or the United States, long-run chances depend greatly on economic affairs of planetary demographic alterations that determine the mobility of labour in the international, so that by 2050 the successA of states and its prosperity depends on holding a good work force, trained and ever ready for invention and version of the alterations that are traveling being made As shown in the figures for the universe state of affairs in 2050 will non be good in footings of population, but authoritiess to take steps non merely have to see the figures, but must find themselves personally acceptable rates population growing, migration, and territorial distribution.A And when we determine that is what is right for them in this affair should explicate appropriate schemes that lead to improved quality of life of people. Those schemes have to be done by the host developed states like Canada and united provinces, because there are the most affected 1s with the illegal in-migrations, if they do n't take actions in this topic, the economic system of these two states is traveling to be affected, and non merely the issue of the economic system, but besides the political relations and civilization, both states must make or implement a large strategic to keep the security of the boundary lines to forestall more people to travel illegal to their lands, but at the same clip give chances to those that already are inside those states this would assist many households and subsequently will be the following coevals that will work and contend for their host state. Mostly Canada that has a really low life speciation ââ¬Ës, because its population is acquiring older faster and by 2050 will be a really old population, that ââ¬Ës why they should maintain those immigrants and had a good political relations of in-m igrations to give helped to those who truly needed in the hapless states, but is this the solution? Or what about if those states restricted all sort of in-migrations, and set up a new civilization with the people that are already populating at that place, doing a mix civilization like one clasp piece and get down a new life, these are inquiries and avowals that are discuses every twenty-four hours by every one, those who approve migrations, and those who does non O.K. it[ 6 ] But the treatment will stay for long clip, because is natural for he authoritiess to discourse this forever without taking belongingss determinations, but when the clip acquire shorter is when migration wo n't hold control and those states will be really affected either if they have many illegal people traversing boundary lines or no one traveling at that place, the thru is that Canada and united provinces need the immigrants to take their economic systems to the top but with high control to forestall to neglect in security spreads where united provinces is really concern and where Canada helped a batch to its neighbour, besides the growth of unemployment degree in united provinces caused by the crisis, China and besides by the illegal in-migration, that ââ¬Ës manner they have to play together for this of import issue.

Similarities and Differences between the Role of Women in Australia and China
Similarities and Differences between the Role of Women in Australia and China Over the last four decades, there has been a major focus on the roles of female citizens in various countries. Although ranked behind Europe and North America, the Asia-Pacific nations have strived to make significant steps towards recognizing the role of women in their socioeconomic and political systems (Cotter, 79). Australia and China are some of the nations that have demonstrated evidence of the changing roles of women. In particular, Australia ranks third behind New Zealand and Philippines.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Similarities and Differences between the Role of Women in Australia and China specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Although China performs poorly in terms of empowering women in all leadership sectors, recent evidence suggests that women in the country are increasingly taking various positions in corporate, social, academic and other fields. Arguably, Chinese and Australian women are increasingly taking the advantage of fast growing economies and social transitions in their countries to improve their welfare and equality, albeit in comparably different ways. The feminism movements of the late 19th century and 20th century produced a profound impact on how the Australian societies perceive women. After gaining the rights to vote and to stand for parliamentary positions in the late 19th century, feminism movements in Australia focused on achieving equality in other areas such as labour, leadership in social and civil sectors, business and corporate, security and military fields (Genardini 34). In the modern world, Australian women are ranked among the most learned females in the region, alongside their counterparts from Philippines and New Zealand. It is worth noting that Australian women have achieved almost equal recognition as potential employees in most sectors. In fact, it has been shown that only a few job categories are considered ââ¬Å"men jobsâ⬠in the modern wo rld. In addition, a number of legislations have been established with an aim of protecting females from gender-based discrimination in education and labour. These factors have contributed to an increase in the number of women competing with their male counterparts at work and in labour market every year. However, human rights commission of Australia (1) provides statistical evidence that women are yet to achieve the desired standards of equality at work. For instance, statistics show that women make about 57% of the total employees of the commonwealth public service. In 2010, the federal government set a target of 40% of all positions in the government boards for women, which is equal to the positions set for men. Apart from these boards, the target also applies to a number of other areas such as government business and private-public sectors. However, a good number of boards have less women members than 40% (Greig, Frank and White 51).Advertising Looking for essay on histor y? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In politics and political leadership, the role of women in Australia has become evidence. The political role of women has changed over the last three decades. For instance, a number of women have successfully vied for local and parliamentary positions at the state and federal region. Moreover, women occupy about 24% of the elected members of the House of Representatives and about 38% of the national senate. This is an indication that women roles have gained positive attention form the society. It is worth noting that the election of Julia Gillard as the first female prime Minister of Australia provides evidence of the changing perceptions that the society has for women. In academia, Australian women occupy more than 42% of the total lecturing and leading positions in public universities. However, women have not achieved the expected 40% of the number of professors in public universities. Th is is an indication that males continue to dominate in the academic field. In law, statistics have shown that women have overtaken men in terms of the number of individuals graduating with law degrees every year. For instance, about 61% of all law graduates in the country are women. However, they hold only 20% of the senior positions in private law firms, which shows that women roles in the field need more attention. Moreover, women occupy only 16% of the total positions in the federal court. Despite these achievements, a number of factors hinder the improvement and recognition of the role of women in public and private sectors. For instance, women bear the largest burden of child rearing. A large number of Australian women remain at home taking care of their children and families, despite having equal chances of employment and leadership with their male counterparts. Secondly, aboriginal women are still considered as subjects of their male counterparts in their societies. They are supposed to perform the roles of housekeeping and child rearing rather than seeking education and leadership positions. Like Australia, the role of women in China has evolved from the traditional belief that womenââ¬â¢s role is only at home and child rearing to a modern paradigm that allows women to participate in socioeconomic development.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Similarities and Differences between the Role of Women in Australia and China specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In labour and workforce, women in China perform better compared to their Australian counterparts. For instance, studies have shown that about 45% of the total working population comprises of women (Li 12). In addition, more than 80% of women who graduate from national and regional universities in China find jobs in the local market (Matthews and Nee128) However, Chinese women bear the burden of illiteracy when compared to Australian fem ales. For instance, a large number of rural women in China are illiterate and poor than males. This is not common in Australia, where females and males in the rural areas have equal chances of education and jobs. Australia performs better than China in terms of empowering women to participate in politics and political leadership. In fact, there is a severe underrepresentation of Chinese females in all political settings. While Australia has experienced women leadership, including a Prime Minister, no Chinese woman has ever made it to the top level of political decision-making bodies, including the Communist Party. Moreover, the Chinese cabinet is primarily made of men. In fact, most regimes have maintained a low number of women ministers (Tamney 81). For example, the Chinese cabinet had only three women by 2011. In fact, recent statistics indicate that Chinese women shy away from competing with men in politics, especially in the parliament. However, Chinese women have better and lea ding roles in business and corporate fields. Studies have shown that legalization of divorce and abortion in China has improved women rights (Jeffreys 67). In turn, this has empowered women. It has enabled them to run businesses, seek board membership in corporations and own companies. In conclusion, women in Australia and China have significantly similar roles and positions in the society and family. Women rights and responsibilities have also evolved over time in the two nations, resulting into a new perception of their abilities and roles. Cotter, Mooney.
